I was
born and raised in Germany and did not move to the United States
until I was 14 years old. The opportunity that I had as a child to
travel throughout Europe gave me an appreciation of the global reach
of the game of basketball. I was a 'gym rat' on the ARMY base that
my family was stationed and it was an encounter with a gentleman who
took a keen interest in my work ethic and raw skills to impact my
love of the game. Mr. Brown would saunter through the base gym on
occasion to watch pick-up games and shoot around. He noticed that I
was in the gym every time that he stopped by. He took me aside and
instructed me in a very simple drill that incorporated improving my
shooting mechanics, ball handling skills, and footwork. As I put the
time and effort into perfecting this '8 spot' shooting drill, I
begin to notice a steady improvement in my game performance.
I set a goal for
myself as a teenager to earn a scholarship to play basketball in
college. I knew that it would take an immense amount of hard work
and commitment to achieve this goal but I am a very determined
individual and I was confident that I could achieve my goal. It was
difficult for me at times because I had to sacrifice a great deal to
meet my academic and athletic commitments. I wasn’t as fortunate as
others to attend summer camps or receive individual training in
basketball skill development, so I took it upon myself to research
information pertaining to developing my basketball skills and
improving my speed, agility, and quickness. My hard work paid off
when I was awarded with an academic-athletic scholarship to play
college basketball. My experience in college was particularly
rewarding due to the fact that I would receive high level
instruction on a year round basis. My collegiate career came to an
abrupt end when I tore the ACL in my left knee, but my love of the
game continued as I became an assistant coach and experienced the
inner workings of a successful college basketball program, learning
about the recruiting process, practice and game planning, and
individual player skill development.
My experience as
an adult with the game of basketball has been very rewarding. I have
had the opportunity to coach at a successful high school program at
Hayfield HS and participate in 2 Northern Region Championship
Finals, winning one of them. Along the way I have forged many
friendships with other coaches at both the high school and
collegiate level.
This game has
been so good to my family and I and I am so fortunate to be able to
train young players in the nuances of the game. I THANK YOU for the
opportunity to impact your life.
